Fin , I totally agree with you and your comments . I too think the film was average and I didn’t feel it was ground breaking at all. But there was obviously a lot spent in promoting it and getting it in front of the people who vote.

It’s taken me years and years of chipping away to get where I am and to make a breakthrough in my field .

Remembering the first interview I had , where the head of HR said “ Mediterranean’s are well known for their hot tempers . How would you deal with a difficult artist in your chair? “ to which I answered “I come from a Mediterranean background , but was born here and I’m about as Mediterranean as you are. I have worked with people in my chair for the last six years and my cv got me this interview . “ With NO contacts and a very immigrant background it wasn’t an easy climb. I’ve always included as many artists from an “immigrant “ background as available in my teams because I want a mixed talent and they have a lot to offer. We just need to keep chipping away.

Not to mention her sister the fashion designer Coco Fennell. Just your 2 average gals making their way in the world…

Revisited this incredible piece after seeing the trailer for Saltburn, her new one, last night and getting very annoyed! It's fun to be reminded of Chukka - Saltburn seems very much of the same mould (i.e. viewing the rich through the lens of the underdog). Thank you for the catharsis both then and now.

This movie was nearly unwatchable for me, especially after having enjoyed the beautiful show ‘I May Destroy You.’

It’s really weird that the punishment the protagonist dishes for the men who attempt to assault her is to just shame them and assume they won’t turn violent. In contrast, her revenge tactics for Alison Brie and Connie Brittan’s characters are genuinely brutal.

Thanks for writing this awesome piece, everyone I’ve sent it to has loved it.

It's well written but like the last one- just reads really weird and personal, like Fin mentioned below. Can't speak much for Emerald as not got round to seeing the film , but you don't get that many Oscar nominations without some degree of talent. It's an astonishing achievement. Coco's dresses are awesome though. And whilst Sam Smith is not my thing at all, he does have huge talent and does a lot for other people. I'm sure there's thousands and thousands of worthier targets. Perhaps a comment on the 100 million dollars left by Robert Kardashian for his kids? Just your 4 average kids making their way in the world, eh.

I agree with the main thrust of the article but not with its target. Clearly the author feels that PYW is overrated, but I think this is more likely a personal judgement than evidence of journalistic conspiracy (not that this doesn't happen). Certainly, Fennell will have had an easier time getting the movie made than many, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't have made it, and the author's opinion of the film itself is irrelevant. The commissioners and financiers and award panels who bias towards their friends are the people at fault here, not the people who benefit from their biases. Go for them, instead.
